Oyster Bay Rotary rocks!

Oyster Bay is famous for many reasons, Billy Joel sang about it, Theodore Roosevelt had his summer White House here, and this seaside hamlet boasts being the home of the very first documented Valentine sent in the United States.

According to the historians at Raynham Hall, while British troops occupied Oyster Bay, Lt. Col. John Graves Simcoe was stationed at the home of Samuel Townsend, what is today Raynham Hall. During his six-month stay from 1778 to 1779 he gave Samuel’s daughter, Sally, a very special letter. Simcoe wrote, “to you my heart I must resign, O choose me for your Valentine.” Sally’s response to the letter is unknown, as is the nature of their relationship. We do however know that, “the letter was written in Oyster Bay, given in Oyster Bay and remained in Oyster Bay,” said Alexander Sutherland, Raynham Hall’s Education Director. The letter was found amongst Sally’s possessions when she died in the house at the age of 82. -end-
